“Sound & Vision” is a new line of products from Angel Air Records, on which a CD is coupled with a DVD. First up is “Best Of Family & Friends”, celebrating the work of vocalist Roger Chapman.
I got to know Chapman through Mike Oldfield’s hit ‘Shadow On The Wall’, and was immediately impressed by the powerful voice of the man. Little did I know that he’d already had an impressive career long before that, most notably with the band FAMILY.
The CD is a compilation of FAMILY tracks. I’m afraid I’m not very familiar with the band, so I can’t say whether this is a good overview of the band’s career, but it’s a solid enough collection of songs from this unique band. Personal favourites include the acoustic ‘My Friend The Sun’, the powerful ‘Strange Band’, ‘The Weaver’s Answer’ and the bluesy ‘Ready To Go’.
The DVD portion of this release is the most interesting part, though. It sees Roger Chapman and his band THE SHORT LIST in concert in a 2002 show in Newcastle, and what an impression this man makes. 16 tracks of enormously entertaining music. Chapman is a musician who doesn’t want to confine himself to just playing rock music, so the set is a very versatile list of fantastic songs. Rock, jazz, folk, blues... His versions of the FAMILY tracks show he doesn’t want to just play the ‘golden oldies’ as they are best known - the tracks sound alive and fresh. Other great tracks include ‘Kiss My Soul’, ‘Habits Of A Lifetime’ and ‘Short List’. There’s also a VERY original take on Chuck Berry’s ‘Downbound Train’. ‘Blind Willy McTell’ is one of my all-time favourite songs in the original version of Bob Dylan, and gets a stunning treatment here as well. The ska version of ‘Shadow On The Wall’ (called ‘Shank’ here) is also worth listening to.
As a bonus, the DVD also includes an interesting interview with Roger Chapman.

“Sound & Vision” is een nieuwe reeks producten van Angel Air Records, waarop telkens een cd wordt gekoppeld aan een dvd. Eerste in de reeks is “Best Of Family & Friends”, een overzicht van het werk van zanger Roger Chapman.
Ik leerde Chapman kennen via de Mike Oldfield hit ‘Shadow On The Wall’, en was meteen erg onder de indruk van zijn krachtige stem. Wist ik veel dat hij toen al een hele carrière achter de rug had, vooral dan met de groep FAMILY.
De cd is een compilatie van FAMILY-nummers. Ik ken de groep niet echt goed, dus ik kan niet zeggen of dit inderdaad een representatief overzicht geeft van hun carrière, maar het is zonder twijfel een leuke verzameling nummers van deze unieke band. Persoonlijk favorieten zijn het akoestische ‘My Friend The Sun’, het krachtige ‘Strange Band’, ‘The Weaver’s Answer’ en het bluesy ‘Ready To Go’.
De dvd is echter het meest interessante van deze uitgave. Hij bevat een concert uit 2002 van Roger Chapman met zijn groep THE SHORT LIST, en wat een indruk maakt deze man. 16 nummers met enorm boeiende muziek. Chapman is zo’n muzikant die zich niet in een vakje wil laten stoppen en hij speelt dan ook een heel gevarieerde setlist, met rock, jazz, blues, folk… Zijn versies van de FAMILY nummers laten zien dat hij zich niet graag houdt aan de bekende versies van deze ‘golden oldies’ – deze nummers klinken fris en ze leven. Andere knappe nummers zijn ‘Kiss My Soul’, ‘Habits Of A Lifetime’ en ‘Short List’. Er is ook een erg originele versie van Chuck Berry’s ‘Downbound Train’. ‘Blind Willy McTell’ is een van mijn all-time favoriete nummers in de originele versie van Bob Dylan, en het nummer wordt hier in een volledig nieuw, al bijna even mooi jasje gestoken. De ska-versie van ‘Shadow On The Wall’ (hier ‘Shank’ getiteld) is ook best leuk.
Als bonus staat er op de dvd ook nog een interessant interview met Roger Chapman.
