This Belgian band, born out of the ashes of different metal projects, caught my attention when I found out they signed a record deal with Moonzoo records. This record label, owned by Mario Guccio (Machiavel) signed a distribution deal with Universal music. Its main target is to promote young bands.
Meeting Valerie Becquart drove the band into a more poppy direction. The sound of this band has the same “Hooverphonic flow, feeling and mood”. The voice of Valerie reminds me a lot of Geike.
The album offers a mix of ballads and up-tempo tracks, wrapped in acoustic and electrical sounds. The sound is fresh and mature and some songs might even make it into the charts. Valerie’s voice sounds bittersweet, her English is ok and the slight French accent sometimes gives it an exotic touch.
This is no prog-, metal- or symfo-album…but an album offering some nice pop/rock melodies. The songs are very catchy and sweet, never disturbing, reach your head but… rarely touched my heart or crawled under my skin.

Deze Belgische band kende haar vaste vorm in 2002. Uit verschillende metalprojecten ontstond de band Urshey. Deze band was mij totaal onbekend en trok pas mijn aandacht toen ik vernam dat ze een platendeal tekenden bij Moonzoo records, een label opgericht door Mario Guccio (Machiavel). Dit label stelt zich tot doel jonge bands te promoten. Voor de distributie van hun albums klopten ze aan bij de grootste major, Universal Music.
Het was pas sinds de komst van Valerie Becquart als lead vocaliste dat de band koos voor een meer pop/rock gerichte aanpak. De muziek laat zich het best omschrijven als een “Hooverphonic-light”. Dezelfde bedwelmende arrangementen, dezelfde feel. Ook de stem van Valerie lijkt soms verdacht veel op die van Geike (Hooverphonic). Misschien zijn de songs meer compact en minder atmosferisch maar toch moest ik aan de trots uit Sint-Niklaas denken toen ik de cd in mijn lader schoof.
Alles klinkt zeer braaf en poppy. Te braaf, te poppy ? Dat moet ieder voor zich uitmaken. Hitpotentie hebben de nummers beslist. De stem van Valerie klinkt mooi. Haar Engels is verzorgd (toch vaak een probleem voor Franstalige zangeressen) en het kleine accent geeft de muziek wel iets exotisch.
Dit is geen prog, geen metal, geen symfo …maar gewoon fijne pop/rock van eigen bodem. Alles klinkt mooi en sprankelend met veel bubbels… maar als het over is , ben je al vergeten hoe het ook alweer smaakte.
