Sweden has been delivering many good rockbands over the past years. WORK OF ART is yet another addition to that list, playing pure aor. Already conceived in 1992, they had to put the band on hold until last year, when Robert Säll and Herman Furin decided that they had waited long enough. After contacting their friend Lars Säfsund to perform the production, it was decided that he also would become the singer of the band. They made a demo, which was received extremely well. It was a very promising and impressive performance, and Frontiers Records took them under their wings. The result is ‘Artwork’, an album filled with songs that take you back to the good old 80’s, when aor was king.
It’s immediately clear from listening to the first song of the record, ‘Why Do I?’, that this is going to be a traditional aor-album. The sound is almost exactly like TOTO, and that’s true for 90% of the following songs. The band-members give other influences, like JOURNEY, SURVIVOR, PRIDE OF LIONS and even SAGA, but it’s obvious that TOTO’s example is what drives WORK OF ART. Nice melodic rocksongs like ‘Cover Me’, ‘Maria’ and ‘Her Only Lie’ are alternated with radio-friendly compositions like ‘Too Late’ and ‘Camelia’, as well as beautiful ballads like ‘Once In A Lifetime’ and ‘Like No Other’. Lars’ voice is perfect for this style of music, and the trio performs very well, supported by some great studio musicians.
So, is ‘Artwork’ a WORK OF ART? If you’re into aor it really is. Probably the best melodic rock album from 2008 up until now. Just buy it!

Zweden heeft de laatste jaren reeds vele degelijke rock-groepen voortgebracht, en WORK OF ART is er alweer eentje bij op die lijst. ‘Artwork’ is een pure aor-plaat, uitgebracht door Frontiers Records. Reeds opgericht in 1992, maar pas in 2007 van start gegaan, besloten Robert Säll en Herman Furin dat ze lang genoeg hadden gewacht. Toen ze hun vriend Lars Säsund uitnodigden om de productie voor zijn rekening te nemen, werd besloten dat hij ook de zanger van de groep zou worden. Ze maakten vorig jaar een demo, die ontvangen werd met een geweldig positieve kritiek, waarna Frontiers Records de band onder zijn vleugels nam. Het resultaat is ‘artwork’, een plaat die je terugvoert naar de goeie ouwe 80’s, toen iedereen naar aor luisterde.
Na het openingsnummer ‘Why Do I?’ te hebben beluisterd is het duidelijk dat we hier met een traditionele aor-plaat te maken hebben. Het klinkt bijna identiek aan TOTO, en dat geld voor 90% van de nummers. De bandleden geven wel andere invloeden op zoals JOURNEY, SURVIVOR, PRIDE OF LIONS en zelfs SAGA, maar het is wel duidelijk dat TOTO de drijvende invloed is achter WORK OF ART. Strakke melodische rocksongs zoals ‘Cover Me’, ‘Maria’ en ‘Her Only Lie’ worden afgewisseld met radio-vriendelijke hits als ‘Too Late’ en ‘Camelia’, terwijl prachtige ballads zoals ‘Once In A Lifetime’ en ‘Like No Other’ ook niet ontbreken. Lars Säfsund’s stemgeluid past perfect bij deze muziekstijl, en het trio speelt met hoge kwaliteit, bijgestaan door een aantal schitterende sessie-muzikanten.
Dus, is ‘Artwork’ nu echt een ‘WORK OF ART’? Als je een fan bent van aor vast en zeker! Het is waarschijnlijk de beste melodische rock-plaat van 2008 tot nu toe. Gewoon gaan kopen!
