English:

The problem with Glenn Hughes is that there’s just far too much material coming out. The quality is nearly always excellent , but it’s only the die-hard fans who can keep up with this. As one of those die-hards, I just had to buy his latest release, “Live In Australia”.
In 2006, Hughes went to Australia to write with local celebrity Jimmy Barnes (COLD CHISEL, LIVING LOUD). While he was there, he did a pair of acoustic shows. The one he did on 17th June is now out on CD and DVD.
This acoustic setting gives Hughes the opportunity to get back into the soulful mood of his very first solo album “Play Me Out” (1977). To hear him play ‘I Found A Woman’ off that album is an absolute joy, and one can only be sad that not more songs from those days are played. Still, the reworking of songs like ‘Coast to Coast’ and ‘This Time Around’ fits this style perfectly. Also top notch are his cover versions of ‘Nights In White Satin’ and ‘Whiter Shade Of Pale’. And then there’s ‘Mistreated’ of course... how can you not admire that Voice?
The unplugged setting doesn’t quite work for funky tracks like ‘Gettin’ Tighter’ and ‘Soul Mover’ and also the newer tracks ‘Last Mistake’ and ‘This Is How I Feel’ just don’t quite sound right.
Not an essential release but those who like the soulful Glenn Hughes - as opposed to the rock and funk maestro - should definitely buy this one.
Next up for Hughes fans is his long-awaited collaboration with guitarist Robin George (“Sweet Revenge” – demos that were recorded way back in the early 90’s) and his newest solo album: "First Underground Nuclear Kitchen" (F.U.N.K.). And who knows, HUGHES/THRALL 2 might also finally see the light of day…

Nederlands:
