On paper, a collaboration between legends Jack Bruce and Robin Trower seems like a dream come true. Still, the two albums they did together (“B.L.T”. and “Truce” – both 1981) didn’t quite live up to the high expectations. When the duo recently went back in the studio to record some bonus tracks for the remasters of those albums, all worked out so well that they went on to record a complete new album: “Seven Moons”.
This time, the pair really delivers. “Seven Moons” is an excellent album, mixing the best of what both protagonists have to offer. It doesn’t really rock full out, but the tracks are all strong. They have a ‘jammy’ feel to them - this is an album that takes you way back to the early 70’s. It sounds like a mix of CREAM and early TROWER, which means there’s a lot of the (slower) work of JIMI HENDRIX in there as well: psychedelic blues at its best.
I could mention the moody title track, the ultra-psychedelic ‘Distant Places Of the Heart’, the oh-so-beautiful ‘Just Another Day’ and the more traditional blues of ‘Bad Case Of Celebrity’ as my favourites, but then this is an album’s album – all tracks complement each other and they all rightfully deserve their place on this record. An extended guitar solo or two would have been nice, but frankly, that’s just nitpicking. Trower’s guitar playing is fantastic, as always, as is Bruce’s bass work. His distinctive vocals always add something extra, and they definitely do here. Gary Husband (LEVEL 42, John McLaughlin) delivers some nice drumming. His share in the artistic success of this album shouldn’t be underestimated.
Just when I thought they don’t make albums like in the old days anymore, here come Jack Bruce and Robin Trower with “Seven Moons” – terrific stuff!

Op papier lijkt en samenwerking tussen Jack Bruce en Robin Trower op een natte droom. Toch losten de twee albums die ze samen maakten (“B.L.T”. en “Truce” – beide 1981) die hoge verwachtingen niet helemaal in. Toen het duo recentelijk weer de studio introk om bonusnummers op te nemen voor de remasters van deze albums, klikte het zo goed dat er uiteindelijk een heel album uit voortkwam: “Seven Moons”.
Deze keer slaan ze spijkers met koppen. “Seven Moons” is een uitstekend album dat de beste eigenschappen van de twee protagonisten mengt. Het album rockt nergens echt, maar de nummers zijn alle sterk. Ze klinken alsof ze al jammend ontstaan zijn - deze plaat neemt je mee terug naar de vroege jaren ’70. Ze klinkt als een mix van CREAM en de vroege TROWER, wat betekent dat er ook heel wat gelijkenissen zijn met het (tragere) werk van Jimi Hendrix: psychedelische blues op z’n best.
Ik zou het moody titelnummer als favoriet kunnen noemen, samen met het ultra-psychedelische ‘Distant Places Of the Heart’, het o-zo-mooie ‘Just Another Day’ en de meer traditionele blues van ‘Bad Case Of Celebrity’, maar dit is echt een ‘album’s album’. De songs complementeren elkaar en ze verdienen allemaal hun plaats op deze plaat. Een of twee uitgebreide gitaarsolo’s zouden niet misstaan hebben, maar eigenlijk is dat gewoon nitpicking. Trowers gitaarwerk is geweldig, zoals altijd, net als de bas van Bruce. Zijn herkenbare vocalen voegen altijd iets speciaals toe en dat is hier zeker ook het geval. Gary Husband (LEVEL 42, John McLaughlin) neemt het drumwerk voor zijn rekening en zijn aandeel in het artistieke succes van deze schijf mag niet onderschat worden.
Net wanneer ik dacht dat ze geen albums meer maken als vroeger, komen Jack Bruce en Robin Trower hier opdraven met “Seven Moons” – schitterend werk!
