Not one, but two cd’s full of odd noises and soundscapes. That’s what this album is about.
This “Sateenkaarisuudelma” is the fourth solo album of Finnish musician Sami Sänpäkkilä, under the name of ES. The fact that I’ve never heard of him, or his band KIILA, might already be an indication that this is not exactly the type of music I’m specialized in. And indeed, I don’t like this... ‘odd noises and soundscapes’ is exactly the description that fits this music. Most of it sounds like that horrible esoteric meditation music that should be relaxing. Not for me, it isn’t. I have to say that, at times, something beautiful is created. But then waiting for two full cd’s for those odd moments of beauty is asking a bit too much from these ears.
I’ve listened to this a couple of times, and I’ve tried to ‘get it’, but I still think it’s awful. I’m sure there’ll be an audience for this kind of ‘music’, but it’s definitely not my cup of tea.

Niet één, maar twee cd’s vol vreemde klanken en geluidstapijten. Dat is wat dit album te bieden heeft.
Deze “Sateenkaarisuudelma” is het vierde solo-album van de Finse muzikant Sami Sänpäkkilä, onder de naam ES. Het feit dat ik nog nooit van hem gehoord heb, of van zijn band KIILA, wijst er wellicht al op dat dit niet bepaald het soort muziek is waarin ik gespecialiseerd ben. En inderdaad, hier hou ik absoluut niet van… ‘vreemde klanken en geluidstapijten’ is exact de beschrijving die bij deze muziek past. Het grootste deel van het album klinkt als die vreselijke esoterische meditatiemuziek die je tot rust zou moeten brengen. Bij mij lukt dat in ieder geval niet. Ik moet zeggen dat er bij momenten wel iets moois wordt gecreëerd. Maar twee volle cd’s wachten op die zeldzame mooie momenten, vraagt toch een beetje te veel van deze oren.
Ik heb hier verscheidene keren naar geluisterd, en heb geprobeerd om het ‘te vatten’, maar ik vind het nog steeds vreselijk. Ik ben zeker dat er wel een publiek te vinden is voor dit soort ‘muziek’, maar het is absoluut mijn ding niet.
