Ted Poley will go down in history as ‘hair metal’ band DANGER DANGER’s lead vocalist, but he’s done quite a lot of things outside of this band as well: solo, with BONE MACHINE, with MELODICA and with his musical partner Gerhard Pichler. OK, so I was never a DANGER DANGER fan and Poley’s voice has always sounded a bit annoying to me, so I might not be the ideal person to review this, but here goes...
First of all, Poley’s second solo album “Smile” is quite a decent effort. His voice sounds fine most of the time (I’d expected the worst after recently hearing his bloody awful 2000 effort “Long Way From Home” with MELODICA), the musicianship and the sound are fine and the songs are professionally crafted. Nothing to complain about then? Well, not exactly. Not once did I feel any kind of excitement while listening to this. There’s so much music coming out these days is this aor/melodic rock style, and this just doesn’t do enough for me to stand out. ‘Average’ is the word that I’m looking for...
Still, I’ve enjoyed listening to this album a coupe of times and I think DANGER DANGER and Ted Poley fans in particular won’t be disappointed. I don’t think this will be in my cd player very often in the future, though.

Ted Poley zal de geschiedenis ingaan als zanger van de ‘hairmetal’ band DANGER DANGER, maar ook daarbuiten heeft hij al heel wat gepresteerd: solo, met BONE MACHINE, met MELODICA en met zijn muzikale partner Gerhard Pichler. OK, ik was nooit een fan van DANGER DANGER en van Poleys zang, dus ik ben wellicht niet de ideale man om deze plaat te bespreken, maar hier gaan we toch…
Eerst en vooral, Poleys tweede soloalbum “Smile” is zeker een degelijk werkje geworden. Zijn zang klinkt voor het grootste deel goed (ik had het ergste gevreesd na recent zijn afgrijselijke cd “Long Way From Home” met MELODICA uit 2000 gehoord te hebben), het muzikaal vakmanschap en de sound zijn uitstekend en de songs zijn professioneel in elkaar gestoken. Niets om over te klagen dan? Wel, niet helemaal. Niet een keer voelde ik dat enthousiasme dat goeie rock in me zou moeten losmaken. Er komt vandaag zoveel muziek uit in dit aor/melodic rock genre, en dit doet me gewoon te weinig om daar bovenuit te steken. ‘Middelmatig’ is het woord waar ik naar zoek…
Eerlijk is eerlijk: ik heb met plezier een paar keer geluisterd naar dit plaatje, en ik denk dat DANGER DANGER en Ted Poley fans in het bijzonder niet echt teleurgesteld zullen zijn. Ik verwacht echter niet dat deze schijf nog vaak in mijn cd-speler zal terechtkomen.
