Gary Hughes has always been a busy man; producing and writing songs for multiple projects, even going as far as working on more than three albums at a time! He worked with acts like Bob Catley (Magnum) and Hugo, apart from his own work with Ten and as a solo artist. Lately, however, there has been a gap in the man's work, and it's already been since 2003, when his masterpiece 'Once And Future King' hit the stores. Finally, a new album is out on 'Frontier Records', called 'Veritas'. Gary has been working around the clock, writing and producing his latest work, and also playing most instruments and vocals.
I always liked Gary's voice a lot. It's warm, melodic and immediately recognisable. Putting in this cd brought back memories of playing the first Ten albums. Then again, it also represents a bit of a disappointment. The drums sound awfully electronic, most compositions are nowhere near the quality that I'm used to from Gary, and worst of all, the production is not very good. Could it be that Gary has a dip in his musical inspiration these days? There are a couple of great songs on 'Veritas', like 'Time To Pray', 'See Love Through My Eyes' and the wonderful 'Wide Awake In Dreamland' (which proves that Gary still can do it!). Many of the tracks, however, feel like uninspired fillers.
'Veritas' from Gary Hughes unfortunately is not the great sequel to 1998's 'Precious Ones' we all hoped it would be. A few great tracks can't hide the fact that this album has a poor production, and some of the weakest songs I have ever heard from Gary. For the fans, this release still is a must (it is Gary Hughes after all!), but otherwise, this may not be for you.

Gary Hughes is altijd al een bezig bijtje geweest; als producer en componist van meerdere projecten ging hij zelfs zo ver om meer dan drie platen tegelijkertijd af te werken! Hij werkte reeds samen met Bob Catley (Magnum) en Hugo, alsook met Ten en als solo artiest. De laatste tijd is het echter verdacht stil rond Hughes, en het is al geleden van 2003 dat zijn meesterwerk 'Once And Future King' werd uitgebracht. Uiteindelijk is er nu toch een nieuwe plaat van de grootmeester, uitgebracht door 'Frontiers Records', met de naam 'Veritas'. Gary heeft er veel werk ingestoken; de productie, de composities en hij speelde ook bijna alle instrumenten en zanglijnen zelf.
Ik heb Gary's stem altijd graag gehoord. Ze is warm, melodisch en onmiddelijk herkenbaar. Deze cd riep dan ook sterke herinneringen op aan de tijd dat ik de eerste Ten platen hoorde. Tegelijkertijd veroorzaakte ze echter ook enige teleurstelling. De drums klinken verschrikkelijk electronisch, de meeste composities hebben niet de kwaliteit die ik van Gary gewoon ben, en het ergste van alles is de zéér slechte productie. Zou het kunnen dat Gary Hughes een dip heeft in zijn muzikale inspiratie tegenwoordig? Er staan gelukkig wel een paar mooie nummers op dit album, zoals 'Time To Pray', 'See Love Through My Eyes' en het prachtige 'Wide Awake In Dreamland' (dat bewijst dat Gary het nog steeds kan!). De meeste songs voelen echter aan als ongeïnspireerde opvullertjes.
'Veritas' van Gary Hughes is helaas niet het prachtige vervolg geworden op 'Precious Ones' uit 1998, waar we allemaal op hadden gehoopt. Een paar prachtige nummers kunnen niet verdoezelen dat de productie erg slecht is, en dat sommige songs tot de zwakste kunnen gerekend worden uit Gary's carriere. Voor de fans is 'Veritas' nog steeds een must (het is tenslotte Gary Hughes!), maar anderen zouden wel eens diep teleurgesteld kunnen zijn.
