This band from Temse ‘The Agreement’ has been formed with members from the former Skool’s Out, Sincere and Unsure, bands mainly active in the punkrock school. With this new band they want to take another direction, if course there are still some elements from the past, but now the Music is mainly focused on heavy rock, varied with melodic pop, they call it themselves ‘powerpoprock’. They are still looking for some recognition in their own country, they have already some fans abroad, proven by their recent tour in Scotland.
I have discovered these guys during a rock contest, where they played a nice but heavy set. Naturally this same wall of sound is not present on this demo cd, ‘The Agreement’ is a true live band. A track like ‘I am Human’ sounds really like mainstream rock with heavy guitars, the brothers Weyn are singing very well in harmony and the rhythm section is mainly driven by ‘rock and beat machine’ Kurt Weckhuyzen and the German bass player Miguel Wensch. The tracks have been recorded in the same studio as Nailpin, not a coincidence because there are some comparisons between both bands. ‘A new day’ has a lot of hit potential, it is some lighter guitar pop, which will certainly appeal to a younger public. The power track ‘Leave the light on’ has a wink to punkrock, heavy but melodic, not more and not less. Often their music is related to bands like Alkaline Trio and The Stereophonics, but principally they want to develop their own sound, anyway, ‘The Agreement’ is a name to remember!

De Temse groep ‘The Agreement’ is ontstaan uit de inmiddels ontbonden Skool’s Out, Sincere en Unsure, bands die zich vooral profileerden in het punkrock-genre. Met deze nieuwe groep willen ze echter een nieuwe koers varen, uiteraard zijn nog wel elementen van vroeger aanwezig, maar de klemtoon ligt nu meer op rauwe rock, afgewisseld met melodieuze pop, zelf kiezen ze voor de term ‘powerpoprock’. Voorlopig zoeken ze nog erkenning in het binnenland, want buiten de landsgrenzen hebben ze ook al fans weten te vergaren, getuige hun recente tournee in Schotland.
Zelf heb ik ze ontdekt tijdens een rockconcours, waar ze met een stevige set de pannen van het dak speelden. Diezelfde ‘wall of sound’ is natuurlijk niet echt aanwezig op deze demo-cd, ‘The Agreement’ is dan ook een echte live-band. Een nummer als ‘I am Human’ klinkt rechttoe rechtaan mainstream rock met stevige gitaren, de broertjes Weyn vullen mekaar uitstekend aan op zang en de ritmesectie wordt gedragen door de ‘rock and beat machine’ Kurt Weckhuyzen en de Duitse bassist Miguel Wensch. De nummers werden onder andere opgenomen in dezelfde studio als Nailpin, niet toevallig want er zijn zeker overeenkomsten tussen beide groepen. ‘A new day’ heeft duidelijk hitpotentie, maar is tegelijk wat bravere gitaarpop, een nummer dat zeker zal aanslaan bij de jeugd. ‘Leave the light on’ knalt meteen uit de boxen met een knipoog naar de punkrock, stevig maar toch nog melodieus, meer moet dat niet zijn. Vaak wordt hun muziek gerelateerd aan groepen als Alkaline Trio en The Stereophonics, maar ze willen vooral hun eigen sound ontwikkelen, in ieder geval, ‘The Agreement’ is een naam om te onthouden!
