The world is made up of coincidences. 21 Eyes of Ruby were scheduled to play at Bospop 2007 when they had tried to contact us here at Prog/Metal-Nose. This is how I came to know guitarist and singer Antoine Putz a little bit better. Thanks to him, I was able to shoot some pictures at the festival. Lots of work and the relocation of the websites have prevented me from writing this review earlier than expected.
The music of 21 Eyes of Ruby does not fit into any single category. It’s not Progressive Rock, not Hard Rock nor Heavy Metal, not Jazz Rock, not Psychedelic Rock nor Emo Rock, yet, it’s all in there! You could certainly compare it to the Mars Volta and Tool. The CD reeks of technical abilities and enthusiasm as do the live performances. They don’t shy away from improvising. Their devotion is infectious. You’re immediately sold on it.
The compositions are not so obvious and they don’t seem restricted by any boundaries. This is their strength, yet also their weakness, making the songs difficult to comprehend. However, the most accessible songs are “24 Again”, “Invain/Carmine” and “Off You Go” and they remind me of The Pineapple Thief. It’s these songs that make the album just that much better. But if the other songs weren’t on there, then it wouldn’t be such a striking album! ‘Conquer The World- part 3’ is a lot stronger than ‘part 2’, qua song writing. That makes for a positive and predictable evolution.
The band has consciously chosen to release the album as a double CD, so as to separate the parts. Even though this CD is completely self-produced and released by the band members themselves, it is still an impressively solid production.

De wereld bestaat uit toevalligheden. Net wanneer deze band probeert kontakten te leggen met Prog/Metal-Nose stel ik vast dat ze op Bospop 2007 geprogrammeerd staan. Hierdoor leer ik zanger gitarist Antoine Pûtz wat beter kennen. Dankzij hem heb ik trouwens toch nog enkele foto’s dit jaar op het festival kunnen schieten. Het vele werk en de verhuis van de websites heeft echter belemmerd dat ik deze schijfjes vroeger heb besproken…
De muziek van 21 Eyes Of Ruby past in geen enkel vakje. Dit is geen progressieve rock, geen hardrock of heavy metal, geen jazzrock, psychedelische rock of emorock maar toch steekt het er allemaal in! Vergelijkingen met The Mars Volta & Tool gaan zeker op.
Het technische vermogen en enthousiasme druipen gewoon van de cd af. Live is dit trouwens ook overduidelijk. Zo schuwen ze het improviseren bijvoorbeeld ook niet. Hun inzet werkt trouwens aanstekelijk. Je bent meteen verkocht.
De composities echter zijn niet zo voor de hand liggend en lijken geen grenzen te hebben aan het muzikale heelal. Dit is hun kracht maar meteen ook een probleem, net omdat ze moeilijk te bevatten zijn. Eigenaardig genoeg zijn daarom juist de meest toegankelijke songs zoals “ 24 Again”, “Invain/Carmine” en “Off You Go”, songs die aan The Pineapple Thief doen denken, nu net die songs die het album dat ietsje beter maker. Doch moesten de andere songs niet op het album staan, zou het album niet opvallen! Qua songwriting is daarom ‘Conquer The World pt. 3’ veel sterker dan ‘pt.2’. Wat dus een positieve evolutie voorspelt.
De band heeft bewust gekozen om het album als een dubbele cd uit te brengen net om de delen te scheiden. Hoewel het om een volledig in eigen beheer uitgebracht album gaat, is dit een zeer sterke productie.
