I have no idea if Bert Ostyn was influenced (like the great Van Gogh) by the yellow green drink ‘absint’, but it is a fact that there is a lot of inspiration present on ‘There is nothing’ of this band from Ghent (Belgium). Their previous cd ‘A new day’ was well received by the entire rock press, and they have not deceived me.
Again lots of variety, it is very difficult to pinpoint their music, and why should we do that anyway, the only criterion should be ‘good music’, and the least you can say is that this is the case. Maybe one can discuss about the choice of the single cd, because Plane Song is a nice song with a soft Nirvana touch, but there are certainly better songs on this album. The guys are still using different musical styles, like the funky funky ‘Ask me anything’ , the emotional ballad ‘I’ll be allright (the new single) or the more guitar oriented ‘I wanna forget’. It is very refreshing to hear a young band using instruments like the Hammond organ, it results in ‘Stuck in reverse’ to a very catchy rock song.
And sometimes singer-songwriter Bert Ostyn pops up like in ‘It’s all around you’, only supported by an acoustic guitar. Or what to say about the rock&roll track ‘Nowhere to go’, snatched away from the sixties, although the violins give that old formerly gipsy sound, it seems like a young version of Electric Light Orchestra. In the title track and Let’s be radical’ the guitars are sound a bit heavier than before. After 2 quieter songs the jazzy background of the Ghent fellows is coming back in the longest track of the cd ‘A great Height’, a swinging song in the vein of Grapelli and his Hot Club de France, curious to know if the youth of today will love this. ‘Silent song’ honours his title and is the melancholy ending of ‘There is nothing’.
Obviously not an easy cd for the average music lover with undoubtedly a lot of growing potential, ‘Absynthe Minded’ remains perhaps a stranger in the Belgian rock scene, but I am convinced, hopefully the public will follow.

Of Bert Ostyn en de zijnen voor deze schijf zich naar het evenbeeld van de grote Van Gogh door het geelgroene drankje absint hebben laten leiden weet ik niet, feit is wel dat er opnieuw heel wat inspiratie zit in ‘There is nothing’ van de Gentse band. Hun vorige cd ‘A new day’ werd alvast door de gezamenlijke pers zeer goed ontvangen, en ook nu weer stellen ze niet teleur.
Opnieuw variatie troef, het is dan ook bijzonder moeilijk om deze groep in het juiste vakje te duwen, en waarom zouden we dat ook doen, het enige criterium is goeie muziek, en dat is voldoende aanwezig. Misschien kan je wel vragen stellen bij de keuze van de single, want Plane Song is wel een leuke song met een zeker soft Nirvana-gehalte , maar er zijn zeker sterkere songs op dit album te vinden. De heren zijn nog steeds niet te beroerd om verschillende muziekgenres te beoefenen, zoals in het funky ‘Ask me anything’ , de emotionele ballad ‘I’ll be allright (de nieuwe single) of het meer gitaar georiënteerde ‘I wanna forget’. Het blijft ook altijd verfrissend hoe een jonge band zich weet te bedienen van instrumenten als het Hammond-orgel, wat bijvoorbeeld op ‘Stuck in reverse’ leidt tot een zeer aanstekelijk rock-nummer.
En bijwijlen komt singer-songwriter Bert Ostyn bovendrijven zoals in ‘It’s all around you’, enkel begeleid op akoestische gitaar. Of wat te denken van de rock&roll stamper ‘Nowhere to go’, zo weggeplukt uit de jaren 60, alhoewel de violen dan toch weer zorgen voor het zigeunersfeertje van weleer, het lijkt wel een jonge versie van Electric Light Orchestra. In de titelsong en Let’s be radical klinken de gitaren dan weer net iets harder dan vroeger. Na 2 rustiger nummers komt ook weer de jazzy background van de Gentenaars om de hoek kijken in het langste nummer van de cd ‘A great Height’, een swingend nummer in de stijl van Grapelli en zijn Hot Club de France, benieuwd of de jeugd van tegenwoordig dit ook weet te smaken. ‘Silent song’ doet zijn titel alle eer aan en laat ‘There is nothing’ in een weemoedige sfeer uitdoven.
Voorwaar geen makkelijk schijfje voor de doorsnee muziekliefhebber en ongetwijfeld één met heel veel groeipotentieel, ‘Absynthe Minded’ blijft hoe dan ook een buitenbeentje in de Belgische rockscene, maar mij weten ze zeker nog steeds te overtuigen. Hopelijk volgt het publiek ook.
