It was inevitable that metal act VISION DIVINE’s singer Michele Luppi would continue in the AOR-style after the wonderful “Strive” album from his HEAVEN project (2005). This time the band/project is called LOS ANGELES and features a.o. the omnipresent Tommy Denander on guitars and Fabrozio Grossi. Don’t let yourself be misled by the name of another big name musician: ANGEL/HOUSE OF LORDS keyboards maestro Greg Giuffria. His contribution is very recognizable, but is limited to a very short intro to ‘I Will Carry You’.
Nothing wrong with Luppi’s vocals here. Again he proves to be world class and perfect for this kind of music. I’m not too impressed with the songwriting, though. There are 11 solid compositions on this album, which could be described as typically 80’s AOR. Still, none of the tracks really makes me go WOW! It’s all fairly predictable and although it is very difficult to do something original in the genre, I would expect something that stands out a bit more. The production isn’t as grand as would be fitting on an album like this, either. The drums in particular sound pretty poor.
If you expected anything as strong as the HEAVEN album, you might be a bit disappointed, but that doesn’t mean this is a bad album – just not one you will play over and over again.

Het was onvermijdelijk dat Michele Luppi, zanger van metal act VISION DIVINE, zou verdergaan in het aor-genre na het prachtige “Strive”-album van zijn HEAVEN-project (2005). Ditmaal kreeg zijn band/project de naam LOS ANGELES en kreeg het de medewerking van o.a. de alomtegenwoordige Tommy Denander en Fabrizio Grossi. Laat je niet misleiden door een andere grote naam: ANGEL/HOUSE OF LORDS keyboard-maestro Greg Giuffria. Zijn bijdrage is zeer herkenbaar, maar blijft beperkt tot een korte intro tot ‘I Will Carry You’.
Er is absoluut niets mis met de zang van Michele Luppi. Opnieuw bewijst hij een wereldzanger te zijn en perfect voor dit soort muziek. Ik ben echter niet echt onder de indruk van de songs. Er staan 11 solide composities op deze plaat, die kunnen beschreven worden als typische 80’s aor. Toch geeft geen van deze nummers me een WOW-gevoel. Het klinkt allemaal nogal voorspelbaar, en hoewel het moeilijk is om nog iets origineels te doen in dit genre, verwacht ik toch iets dat wat meer opvalt. De productie is ook niet zo groots als je bij dit soort muziek zou wensen. Vooral de drums klinken behoorlijk zwak.
Als je iets verwachtte dat zo sterk is als het HEAVEN-album, zou je misschien wat teleurgesteld kunnen worden, maar dat betekent ook weer niet dat dit een slecht album is – enkel een dat je niet keer op keer opnieuw zal draaien.
