I haven’t been too impressed with the releases on the Transubstans record label. They specialize in retro bands, but although I am a big fan of the sounds of the 70’s in particular, most of the albums the label has released, sound quite unimaginative to me – not to say boring.
Not so with LUCIFER WAS. This is a band that not only sounds as if they were still in the 70’s; they were actually around in those days! This Norwegian band was formed around 1970, and performed some heavy progressive rock that was inspired by BLACK SABBATH, BLACK WIDOW and the like. They split up in 1974, before having the opportunity to record an album. Their debut album wasn’t released until 1997, after they reunited. “The Divine Tree” is the fourth release, and what a terrific album this is.
Imagine a mix between BLACK SABBATH, JETHRO TULL, DEEP PURPLE, ATOMIC ROOSTER and URIAH HEEP, and you might get an idea of what to expect. Lots of flutes, heavy Hammonds, crunching guitars and great vocals – this is an album that delivers. I’m pretty sure you won’t be able to resist strong melodies like ‘The Divine Tree’ and ‘On Earth’. The bluesy aspect of the band is accentuated by the use of the harmonica in ‘Determination’. The album also has a magnificent epic in ‘Crosseyed’, which starts like PURPLE and then turns into a very HEEP-like track.
A band that definitely deserves your attention.

Ik ben nog niet echt onder de indruk geweest van de uitgaven van het Transubstans label. Ze specialiseren zich in retrobands, maar hoewel ik een groot fan ben van vooral de sound van de jaren ’70, vind ik de meeste albums van het label weinig inspirerend, om nog niet te zeggen saai.
Dat geldt echter niet voor LUCIFER WAS. Deze band klinkt niet enkel alsof ze nog in de 70’s leefden; ze bestonden destijds zelfs al! Deze Noorse band werd gevormd rond 1970 en speelde zware progressieve muziek die vooral geïnspireerd was door groepen als BLACK SABBATH en BLACK WIDOW. Ze splitten in 1974, nog voor ze de kans hadden om een album op te nemen. Hun debuut kwam er dan ook pas in 1997, na hun reünie. “The Divine Tree’ is hun vierde plaat, en wat een prachtalbum is het geworden…
Beeld je een mix in van BLACK SABBATH, JETHRO TULL, DEEP PURPLE, ATOMIC ROOSTER en URIAH HEEP, en je krijgt misschien een idee van wat je kan verwachten. Heel wat dwarsfluit, zware Hammonds, stevige gitaren en knappe zang – dit album heeft het allemaal. Ik ben er nogal zeker van dat je niet zal kunnen weerstaan aan sterke melodieën als ‘The Divine Tree’ en ‘On Earth’. Het bluesy karakter van de band wordt geaccentueerd door het gebruik van de mondharmonica in ‘Determination’. Op het album staat met ‘Crosseyed’ ook een magnifieke epic, die als PURPLE begint en dat evolueert naar een erg HEEP-achtige track.
Een band die vast en zeker je aandacht verdient.
