English:

“We want to challenge artists and people in the music business. We want to go somewhere where people haven’t been yet”, suggests Bootsy Collins. Science Faxtion is Bootsy’s new project. Collins is best known for his work with Parliament and Funkadelic. He gathered some friends around him, Buckethead and Brain (both famous for their work with Guns N’ Roses) and started off this eclectic musical adventure. It’s not that easy to describe what this music is all about. Is it funk, metal, hip hop? It surely is all of the above. Let’s put it this way: it’s spacerock. One moment it’s heavy, stoner and metal the other minute it’s pure soul, funk or hip hop. Sounds interesting? Yes …and no. Science Faxtion often swings like hell and has plenty of great hooks and grooves, but the album, as a whole, lacks cohesion and direction. It sounds too eclectic. And thus risks to attract … no audience. That would be a pity. Although this is not a top class album, it surely has its moments. The more heavy songs remind me of Living Colour (this band was the first all black metal band which unfortunately fell apart due to lack of commercial success, the band was well ahead of its time).

But too often there is so much going on (spoken word interludes, hip hop parts…) that I sometimes lost interest. I must admit that Collins brings you to a place where no one has ever been before. But unfortunately this place is not always the place you would like to be. Overall this album is okay; but please check out some songs before buying the album.

Nederlands:
