English:

‘Etarlis’ is the latest album from Mermaid Kiss. It comes after the ep ‘Salt on Skin’ and is the first full length album since their 2003 debut album ‘Mermaid Kiss Album. This CD is even mellower than their previous ones. You can hear the strong, classical influences play a major role on the entire album, starting from the very first song, “Prelude”. The journey through ‘Etarlis’ is filled with violins, brass instruments, etc. that are reproduced by some very solid samplers.
‘Etarlis’ is an ambitious and complicated story based on the fantasy story of the same name. You can find more about this story at www.etarlis.co.uk, which is a website that, not coincidentally, was launched together with this album. The musical adventures that are reproduced on this album have stirred up some interest. Mermaid Kiss is full steam ahead with her gorgeous melodies, sound loops and the angelic, fragile female voices of Evelyn and Kate. Those voices bring you into total ecstasy, just as the sirens did way back then when seducing the sailors. This makes the name Mermaid Kiss especially well chosen. You become fixated on the melodies even after numerous listening sessions. A tad more solo guitar work would have snatched the prog rock lover quicker than usual, but the attentive symphonic rocker knows that there are lovely guitar licks from Nigel that lie hidden between those beautiful synthesizer sounds.
‘Etarlis’, from Mermaid Kiss, has taken the next step towards recognition within the symphonic landscape. The mood that has been created gives the listener a day dreaming feeling of nostalgic home sickness for something totally unattainable. This is what makes the album a success. I just hope that it’s not too mellow in general and would have preferred hearing some explosive guitar solos. But it’s still an incredibly beautiful album!

Nederlands:
