English: Drawing from heritage of Chick Corea of “Madhatter” and “Music Magic” years, Soft Machine’s Canterbury style and King Crimson of the mid 70-s, Spanish Planeta Imaginario (Imaginary Planet) not only play technically marvellous fusion, but they create also such wonderful tunes. Tunes that will stay with you, once you dug through the first difficulties to comprehend their complex music. Yet another comparison pops into my mind: Canadian Miriodor, only their Spanish peer is a little more adventurous.
The sound of Planeta Imaginario is defined by all band members, who put equally their shares in the group’s effort. There is this imaginative keyboard play of the band’s leader Marc Capel Nadal, excellent guitar solo’s of Eneco Alberdi Laskurian, masterly drums of Vasco Trilla, fretless bass of Josep Manresa and of course the omnipresence of 4 wind instruments players: two saxes, trumpet and trombone/flugelhorn. All players allow frivolity to each other, everybody gets his turn once in a while, and all together the group achieves that necessary stage of perfect chemistry, when everything is just right.
It is difficult to name the highlights on this record, all songs are fantastic. After a first few listens you will surely remember the fusion epic “Biomassa” with it’s African chorus, or “El Teatro de Los Faranduleros” - an easy, mostly acoustic song with a wonderful melody. “Trastornos Ópticos del Oso Bipolar” is how Soft Machine would play Fracture from King Crimson’s “Starless and Bible Black”, with very recognisable Fripp-style guitar loops. There’s maybe only one lesser moment on the record. On “La caja negra” - another long fusion suite, which is wonderfully composed, but has a coda that would bring the audience in ecstasy during concert, only it’s really too long for the home listeners.
Planeta Imaginario was founded in Barcelona, Spain in 1999. The name of the group comes from the surrealistic TV-show for the children, produced in 1980-s in Barcelona. The imaginative show was a huge success, and the Catalonian kids had no problems with perceiving of the surrealistic concepts. Apparently, the effect of the show on the kids is durable. The band plays once in a while abroad, but mostly, they can be seen in Spain and especially in their home town. Well, this fact could be another reason to visit Barcelona!
