I must admit I’m not familiar with Rick Springfield’s work. Yes, of course I know ‘Jessie’s Girl’, and I’ve always thought this was a fine track, but somehow it never inspired me to delve into the man’s other work, which is quite extensive, by the way. So, believe it or not: apart from that one hit single, “Venus In Overdrive” is my first introduction to Rick Springfield’s work.
Track number one isn’t exactly a big surprise. ‘What’s Victoria’s Secret?’ sounds suspiciously close to ‘Jessie’s Girl’: a fun and catchy tune, but hardly memorable in its own right. The rest of the album is quite something else, though. Most of the cd could be described as a mix between 80’s power pop and the more modern emo rock movement. This makes for some quite intriguing songs. I was very impressed with ‘I’ll Miss That Someday’, ‘One Passenger’, ‘Oblivious’ (COLDPLAY, anyone?), the absolutely brilliant title track and the BEATLES-inspired ‘Warning Shots’ (which happens to be about John Lennon’s murder), and found that I loved these songs even more every time I listened to them. Powerful, catchy, emotional… these tracks prove that, while Springfield may not be at the top of the hit lists these days, he definitely should be.
Springfield wrote and produced this album together with bassist Matt Bissonette, and both should be commended for some excellent work. Pop rock, power pop, … whatever you call it, this is a great album.

Ik moet toegeven dat ik niet bekend ben met het werk van Rick Springfield. Ja, natuurlijk ken ik ‘Jessie’s Girl’, en ik heb dit altijd een leuk nummertje gevonden, maar het inspireerde me ook nooit om ’s mans andere werk te ontdekken, dat trouwens behoorlijk uitgebreid is. Dus, geloof het of niet: behalve die ene hitsingle is “Venus In Overdrive” mijn eerste kennismaking met Springfields muziek.
Track nummer één is niet bepaald een verrassing. ‘What’s Victoria’s Secret?’ lijkt verdacht veel op ‘Jessie’s Girl’: een leuk, catchy nummertje, maar op zich niet bepaald memorabel. De rest van het album is echter heel wat anders. De cd kan voor het grootste deel omschreven worden als een mix van 80’er jaren power pop en de meer moderne emorock-beweging. Dit brengt enkele intrigerende songs voort. Ik was zeer onder de indruk van ‘I’ll Miss That Someday’, ‘One Passenger’, ‘Oblivious’ (COLDPLAY, anyone?), het absoluut briljante titelnummer en het door de BEATLES geïnspireerde ‘Warning Shots’ (dat trouwens over John Lennons moord gaat), en ik betrapte me erop dat ik deze nummers elke keer ik opnieuw luisterde nog beter en beter vond. Krachtig, catchy, emotioneel… deze tracks tonen aan dat, hoewel Springfield niet langer aan de top van de hitlijsten staat, hij daar vandaag wel degelijk nog thuishoort.
Springfield schreef en produceerde het album samen met bassist Matt Bissonette, en beiden verdienen een compliment voor hun oerdegelijke werk. Pop rock, power pop,… hoe je het ook wil noemen, dit is een uitstekend album.
