Do you remember THE RUTLES? A brilliant pastiche/tribute on which Eric Idle and others parodied the BEATLES in quite spectacular fashion. New songs which were clearly based on BEATLES originals. What about ‘All You Need Is Cash’, ‘The Tragical History Tour’, ‘Sgt. Rutter’s Only Dars Club Band’ and ‘Can’t Buy Me Lunch’? Hilarious.
A similar tribute is given KISS here, by American band 1977 (without the parody, that is). Their debut album has 10 original songs, which sound so much like KISS in their heydays, that at times you’d swear you were listening to outtakes from “Destroyer”, “Rock And Roll Over” or “Love Gun”. The sound, the playing... As for the voices: ‘Gene’ and ‘Ace’ are quite close to the originals. Not so for ‘Paul’ and ‘Peter’, but the KISS atmosphere is still retained. You’ll recognize references to (and even copied parts of) ‘Love Gun’, ‘God Of Thunder’ , ‘Plaster Caster’, ‘Calling Dr. Love’, ‘Hooligan’ and many others... scattered throughout the album.
The cd (in itself fabricated as a mini vinyl record) is released in an mini lp sleeve, a facsimile of KISS’ “Love Gun”, with the characters blackened. It even has a sticker with the 1977 logo written in blood, echoing the inner sleeve of the original “Love Gun” album, if I remember correctly.
Big fun, this album, and in my opinion a much better tribute to KISS than the countless covers albums that have been released. The KISS album that never was... but could have been.

Herinner je je THE RUTLES? Een briljante pastiche/tribute waarmee Eric Idle en anderen de BEATLES op spectaculaire wijze parodieerden. Nieuwe songs die toch duidelijk gebaseerd waren op originelen van THE BEATLES. Wat dacht je van ‘All You Need Is Cash’, ‘The Tragical History Tour’, ‘Sgt. Rutter’s Only Darts Club Band’ en ‘Can’t Buy Me Lunch’? Hilarisch.
KISS is hier het onderwerp van een gelijkaardige tribute (maar dan zonder de parodie), uitgevoerd door de Amerikaanse band 1977. Hun debuutalbum telt 10 originele songs, die zo sterk lijken op KISS in hun hoogdagen, dat je bij momenten zou zweren dat je naar outtakes uit “Destroyer”, “Rock And Roll Over” of “Love Gun” zat te luisteren. De sound, de instrumenten… Wat de stemmen betreft… ‘Gene’ en ‘Ace’ klinken soms griezelig dicht bij de originelen. Dat geldt niet voor ‘Paul’ en ‘Peter’, maar toch blijft het KISS-sfeertje intact. Je zult referenties (en zelfs gekopieerde momenten) herkennen van ‘Love Gun’, ‘God Of Thunder’ , ‘Plaster Caster’, ‘Calling Dr. Love’, ‘Hooligan’ en vele andere, verspreid over het hele album en de tien songs.
De cd (op zich al uitgevoerd als een mini vinylplaat) wordt uitgebracht in een mini-lp hoes, een kopie van KISS’ “Love Gun”, waarop de personages zwart gemaakt zijn. Je krijgt er zelfs een sticker bij met het 1997-logo geschreven in bloed – een knipoog naar de binnenhoes van het oorspronkelijke “Love Gun”-album, als ik me niet vergis.
Heel, heel leuk, dit album, en wat mij betreft een veel interessantere tribute aan KISS dan de ontelbare covers-albums. Het KISS-album dat er nooit geweest is… maar er net zo goed wel had kunnen zijn.
