There are lots of bands that have been around for a couple of decades, but very few of them seem capable of making new music that comes anywhere near the quality of their classic work. URIAH HEEP managed just that with their 1995 album “Sea Of Light”, in my opinion an overlooked masterpiece. And I daresay they’ve done the same thing with their latest album “Wake The Sleeper”.
We had to wait quite a while for it (their last album “Sonic Origami” was released in 1998), but it was certainly worth the wait. From the very first song it is clear that HEEP is going for gold again. ‘Wake The Sleeper’ is a frantic opener, nearly completely instrumental. Guitarist Mick Box puts his stamp on this track with some grinding riffing and soloing. The drums are incredible. If you aren’t awake after this one, there’s something seriously wrong with you. ‘Overload’ is bound to be included in HEEP’s live set and might very well end up as one of the best tracks the band has done in their nearly 40-year career. Mick Box’s guitar solo is absolutely stunning. A rocking track, but also very rich – just listen to what is going on in the song: what great arrangements and what a production! ‘What Kind Of God’ is the most progressive track, an absolute beauty. HEEP’s more ‘commercial’ sound is evident in ‘Book Of Lies’ and ‘Light Of A Thousand Stars’. ‘Angels Walk With You’ and ‘War Child’ are Trevor Bolder compositions and thus stand out from the rest of the album. Both excellent songs. Other highlights are the riff-laden ‘Shadow’ and ‘Tears Of The World’.
All the trademark HEEP features are evident all through the album: Box’s distinctive guitar work, the brilliant harmony vocals, Trevor Bolder’s melodic bass, the heavy organ (you’ll hear the most prominent Hammond sound since the Ken Hensley days). Bernie Shaw is outstanding, as always. New drummer Russell Gilbrook’s playing also stands out. It is very different from Lee Kerslake’s (who left the band because of health issues), but it is so incredibly powerful that there is little doubt that he will be embraced by fans.
Lots of ‘oldies’ bands have come up with fine new albums this year – WHITESNAKE, NAZARETH, ALICE COOPER, JUDAS PRIEST, JOURNEY... But URIAH HEEP wins hands down with “Wake The Sleeper”. So, you’d better run to the nearest record store and buy this cd. Quickly!

Er zijn heel wat groepen die al een paar tientallen jaren meegaan, maar weinigen onder hen zijn nog in staat om in dit stadium van hun carrière een kwaliteit af te leveren die kan concurreren met hun klassieke werk. URIAH HEEP lukte dit wel met “Sea Of Light” (1995), wat mij betreft een schandelijk over het hoofd gezien meesterwerk. En ik maak me sterk dat het hen ook nu weer gelukt is met hun nieuwste, “Wake The Sleeper”.
We hebben er lang op moeten wachten (‘Sonic Origami’ dateert van 1998), maar het was meer dan het wachten waard. Vanaf het allereerste nummer is het duidelijk dat URIAH HEEP weer voor goud gaat. ‘Wake The Sleeper’ is een manisch nummer, bijna volledig instrumentaal. Gitarist Mick Box drukt z’n stempel op deze track met z’n malende riffs en solo’s. De drums klinken onwaarschijnlijk stevig. Als je nog niet wakker bent na dit nummer, is er iets serieus mis me je! ‘Overload’ volg; dit is voorbestemd om in de setlist van hun concerten te worden opgenomen en zou wel eens kunnen uitgroeien tot een van de allerbeste nummers die de groep heeft opgenomen in hun bijna 40-jarige carrière. De gitaarsolo van Mick Box is briljant. Een uitermate stevige rocker, maar ook enorm rijk - luister maar eens naar wat er allemaal gebeurt in het nummer. Schitterende arrangementen en wat een productie! ‘What Kind Of God’ is het meest progressieve nummer, een juweeltje. HEEPs meer commerciële sound komt bovendrijven in ‘Book Of Lies’ en ‘Light Of A Thousand Stars’. ‘Angels Walk With You’ en ‘War Child’ zijn Trevor Bolder-composities, en klinken dan ook duidelijk anders. Beide schitterende songs. Andere hoogtepunten zijn het met riffs volgestouwde ‘Shadow’ en ‘Tears Of The World’.
Alle typische HEEP-kenmerken zijn overvloedig aanwezig: Box’ herkenbare gitaargeluid, de briljante samenzang, Trevor Bolders melodieuze bas, het zware orgel (dit is zonder twijfel het meest prominente Hammondgeluid sinds de Ken Hensley-dagen). Bernie Shaw is uitmuntend, zoals altijd. Het drumwerk van nieuweling Russell Gilbrook valt ook op. Het klinkt helemaal anders dan dat van Lee Kerslake (die de band moest verlaten wegens gezondheidsproblemen), maar het is zo onwaarschijnlijk krachtig dat hij zonder twijfel door de fans in de armen zal worden gesloten.
Heel wat ‘oldies’ bands hebben dit jaar een sterke nieuwe plaat uitgebracht: WHITESNAKE, NAZARETH, ALICE COOPER, JUDAS PRIEST, JOURNEY... Maar URIAH HEEP wint met voorsprong met “Wake The Sleeper”. Loop dus meteen naar de platenboer en koop deze cd. Snel!
