It seems like almost every new album from the super-group JOURNEY these days features a new vocalist, yet every one of them sounds almost exactly the same. After Steve Perry left the band, Steve Augerie stepped in at the start of the 21st century. He stayed only for two records, leaving the band to tour with Jeff Scott Soto. 2008 brings yet another new singer, as well as a new album. ‘Revelation’ is the recording debut for Arnel Pineda, a vocalist from the Philippines, and discovered by Neal Schön on YouTube. From the first song ‘Never Walk Away’ on, it’s clear JOURNEY made the right choice with Pineda. He combines the typical Steve Perry-voice with a somewhat more bluesy sound, especially in the lower register. I had the pleasure of seeing them play live on the Arrow Rock Festival, and Arnel really held it together. A great performance from him, as well as from the rest of the band.
‘Revelation’ comes on two discs, the first containing 12 newly composed songs, while the second cd has 11 re-recorded classics. The inclusion of this ‘retro’ cd, makes ‘Revelation’ an ideal choice for newcomers unknown to JOURNEY, because it combines the new and the old, all with the same high recording standards. Pineda’s voice is so much like Perry’s, that you could be forgiven for thinking it actually IS Perry singing here. The new songs from ‘Revelation’ are what make Arnel Pineda stand out, because here, he can use some of his own specific vocal qualities. Neal and Jonathan have done a great job of writing these new tracks, ranging from straight rockers to sensitive ballads. For me, especially ‘Faith In The Heartland’, ‘Never Walk away’, ‘After All These Years’ and the wonderful instrumental ‘The Journey’ demonstrate what the band is capable of. They are all worthy additions to JOURNEY’s already incredible back-catalogue. Speaking of which, the most important of them are all featured on the bonus disc. It’s really great to hear new versions of those very old tracks like ‘Wheel In The Sky’, ‘Lights’ or ‘Anyway You Want It’. It makes this release even more impressive than it already was in it’s own right!
JOURNEY has done a fabulous job with this new album. From Neal’s incredible guitarplaying and Arnel’s beautiful voice, to the all-covering keyboards of Jonathan Cain, not to mention the steady-as-a-rock rhythm duo of Ross Valory and Deen Castronovo, everything is just so perfectly balanced. If you are a JOURNEY-fan, then you already know you need this release. Nevertheless, I would recommend ‘Revelation’ to everyone even remotely interested in melodic rock styles. It really is THAT good. A must-buy!

Het lijkt wel of bijna iedere nieuwe plaat die de supergroep JOURNEY tegenwoordig maakt een nieuwe zanger heeft, maar elk van deze vocalisten klinkt praktisch identiek! Nadat Steve Perry de band had verlaten, werd Steve Augerie de nieuwe voice van JOURNEY. Hij bleef echter maar voor twee platen, waarna er met Jeff Scott Soto verder werd getourd. 2008 brengt ons alweer een nieuwe zanger, alsook een gloednieuwe cd. ‘Revelations’ is het opname-debuut voor Arnel Pineda, een zanger uit de Philipijnen, die door Neal Schön werd ontdekt op YouTube. Vanaf het openingsnummer ‘Never Walk Away’ is het duidelijk dat JOURNEY de juiste keuze heeft gemaakt met Pineda. Hij combineert het typische Perry-geluid met een iewat bluesy sound, vooral in de lagere regionen. Ik heb ze live bezig kunnen zien op Arrow Rock Festival, en Arnel Pineda paste perfect in het plaatje. Het was een prima performance van hem en de andere leden van de groep.
‘Revelation’ wordt geleverd op twee cd’s. De eerste bevat 12 nieuw gecomponeerde songs, terwijl de tweede disc een verzameling is van her-opgenomen versies van hun beste klassiekers. Deze ‘retro’-cd maakt deze uitgave ideaal voor mensen die niet bekend zijn met JOURNEY, omdat zowel het nieuwe als het oude wordt aangeboden, alles met dezelfde prima opname-standaarden. Pineda’s stem lijkt zo sterk op Perry’s, dat het niet beschamend is te geloven dat het daadwerkelijk Steve Perry IS die je hier bezig hoort! De nieuwe composities maken het verschil, wat hier kan Pineda zijn eigen vocale kwaliteiten beter boven halen. Neal en Jonathan hebben weer eens prachtig werk geleverd met het componeren van de nieuwe songs, die variëren van pure rockers tot zalige ballads. Voor mij zijn vooral ‘Faith In The Heartland’, ‘Never Walk away’, ‘After All These Years’ en het prachtige instrumentaaltje ‘The Journey’ perfecte voorbeelden van wat deze groep allemaal aankan. Het zijn stuk voor stuk waardige aanvullingen op het reeds indrukwekkende repertoire van de band. En nu we het toch over hun repertoire hebben: de belangrijkste klassiekers vind je op de bonusdisc. Het geeft een goed gevoel om die erg oude songs zoals ‘Wheel In The Sky’, ‘Lights’ of ‘Anyway You Want It’ eens in een nieuw jasje te horen. Het maakt deze toch al indrukwekkende uitgave nog aantrekkelijker.
JOURNEY heeft met ‘Revelation’ alweer een ongelooflijke prestatie neergezet. Neal’s briljante gitaarwerk, Arnel’s mooie stem, Jonathan Cain’s gedreven toetsenspel, en niet te vergeten het dynamische geluid van ritme-sektie Ross Valory en Deen Castronovo,... het klinkt allemaal zo prachtig harmonieus! Als je al een JOURNEY-fan bent, dan weet je al dat je deze plaat nodig hebt. Maar ik moet ‘Revelation’ aan iedereen die zelfs maar een beetje geïnteresseerd is in melodische rock-muziek aanbevelen. Hij is echt steengoed. Een meesterwerk!
