“Let’s pretend the 90’s never happened,” Johan Bergquist (M.ILL.ION) and Andreas Brodén said, and so they formed ELEVENER. The idea was to go right back to the 80’s and make an AOR album that sounded just like the old days.
And indeed, “When Kaleidoscopes Collide” does sound very much like typical AOR of the time (think FORTUNE, AXE, TOTO,...). Good songs, nice melodies, lots of hooks... This is what once would have been called ‘radio friendly’ (of course, these days radio just isn’t that friendly anymore, at least to these ears...). Sounds interesting? Well, it is, to an extend, although I don’t think ELEVENER quite pulled it off.
First of all, Johan Bergquist is a decent enough singer, but he isn’t exceptional, and we’ve come to expect quite a lot from AOR vocalists. Bergquist’s smooth voice just doesn’t stand out. Secondly, while some songs are quite good (‘This Heart Of Mine’, ‘Shooting Star’, ‘Her Eyes’, ‘Waking Up Without You’), I do feel that there’s a bit too much filler material. Some tracks are even downright boring.
Not a bad album, and as an AOR fan, you’ll certainly find much to enjoy. But it isn’t essential.

“Laten we eens doen alsof de jaren ’90 nooit bestaan hebben,” zeiden jeugdvrienden Johan Bergquist (M.ILL.ION) en Andreas Brodén, en aldus vormden ze ELEVENER. De idee was om terug in de tijd te gaan naar de jaren ’80 en een aor-album te maken dat precies klonk als in die lang vervlogen dagen.
En inderdaad, “When Kaleidoscopes Collide” klinkt heel gelijkaardig aan de typische aor van die periode (denk aan FORTUNE, AXE, TOTO,…) Goede songs, leuke melodieën, massa’s hooks… Dit is wat ooit zou bestempeld geworden zijn als ‘radiovriendelijk’ (natuurlijk is de radio deze dagen zelf niet meer zo vriendelijk, toch niet voor deze oren). Klinkt het interessant? Wel, dat is het tot op zekere hoogte ook wel, hoewel ELEVENER voor mij niet helemaal slaagt.
Eerst en vooral, Johan Bergquist is een zeer degelijke zanger, maar niet exceptioneel, en door de jaren heen zijn we toch wel wat gaan verwachten van aor-vocalisten. Ten tweede, hoewel er heel wat knappe songs op de plaat staan (‘This Heart Of Mine’, ‘Shooting Star’, ‘Her Eyes’, ‘Waking Up Without You’), zijn er naar mijn gevoel wel wat te veel opvullertjes. Sommige tracks doen bij mij zelfs de verveling toeslaan.
Geen slecht album, en als aor-fan zul je hier heel wat moois kunnen ontdekken. Maar het is geen essentiële plaat.
