Richie Kotzen is probably best know as the interim guitarist for both POISON and MR. BIG, but he’s built up quite a discography as a solo artist as well. I must say that I’m not very familiar with his solo work; I’ve just heard a few of his more recent albums. Good stuff, but not exactly something that caught my attention.
That’s probably the reason why this live album was such a wonderful surprise for me. “Live In Sao Paolo” is absolutely stunning. Both his playing and the music style put him in the category of people like Jimi Hendrix, Frank Marino and Johnny Winter, so if you’re into this kind of music, you’ll absolutely love this. This is raw and rocking, bluesy and soulful!
Personal favourites include ‘Socialite’ (with a funky touch à la Glenn Hughes), the power ballad ‘Remember’, ‘So Cold’ and the blues/soul masterpiece ‘Doin’ What The Devil Says To Do’. Also worth mentioning is the cover of ‘Shapes Of Things’, which is done very well. Good as the songs are, it can come as no surprise that it is the lengthy guitar solos and improvisations that steal the show. This brings you right back to the seventies, a time when this was commonplace. What an extraordinary guitar player this Richie Kotzen is!

Richie Kotzen is hier waarschijnlijk het best bekend als interimgitarist voor zowel POISON als MR. BIG, maar ook solo heeft hij al een hele discografie opgebouwd. Ik moet toegeven dat ik niet erg bekend ben met zijn solowerk; ik heb enkel een paar van zijn meer recente platen gehoord. Knap werk, maar niet echt iets dat mijn aandacht trok.
Dat is waarschijnlijk de reden dat dit live-album zo’n grote verrassing voor mij was. Zowel zijn gitaarspel als het muziekgenre zetten hem in dezelfde categorie als een Jimi Hendrix, Frank Marino en Johnny Winter, dus als je daar van houdt, zal je dit album fantastisch vinden. Rauw en rockend, bluesy en soulvol!
Onder mijn persoonlijke favorieten zijn ‘Socialite’ (met een funky touch à la Glenn Hughes), de powerballad ‘Remember’, ‘So Cold’ en het blues/soul-meesterwerkje ‘Doin’ What The Devil Says To Do’. Ook vermeldenswaard is de cover van ‘Shapes Of Things’, dat hier zeer sterk gebracht wordt. Hoe goed de nummers ook zijn, het zal als geen verrassing komen dat het vooral de lange gitaarsolo’s en improvisaties zijn die de show stelen. Dit brengt je zo terug naar de seventies, toen dit bij de meeste rockbands heel gewoon was. Wat een schitterende gitarist is deze Richie Kotzen!
Een absolute aanrader.
