Yet another cd/dvd in the “Sound and vison” series. The cd has a great show by a wonderful band – albeit in a not-so-wonderful sound quality. Probably something for die-hard fans only. But then there are still quite a few of them, aren’t there? The show is from a 1980 concert at the Hammersmith. Not sure where the bonus tracks come from, but they are hardly listenable anyway, as they are quite poor audience recordings.
The dvd “Live Edinburgh 1980” was released two years ago. I’ll include my original review here:
“After Ian Gillan had left Deep Purple in 1973, he started a band of his own, The Ian Gillan Band. The jazz/rock direction the group took wasn’t too successful, so the singer continued under the Gillan banner, with a new band and an all-out hard rock direction. This band did enjoy massive success, and this DVD is evidence as to how great they really were.
The main feature on this DVD is a live TV performance recorded in 1980 in Edinburgh. The line-up features Ian Gillan, the larger-than-life bassist John McCoy, punky guitarist Bernie Tormé, Colin Towns (keyboards) and Mick Underwood (drums). A great performance, with the band playing some terrific tracks from their then-current album, ‘Glory Road’: the hard rocking ‘Unchain Your Brain’ and ‘No Easy Way’, and the bluesy ‘If You Believe Me’. In addition, the rock and roll cover ‘Trouble’ is played, plus the brilliant anti-nuke song ‘Mutually Assured Destruction’.
Sadly, this performance is only about half an hour long. There are a couple of bonus tracks: ‘Smoke On The Water’ (with the very first line-up of the band), ‘Vengeance’ and ‘Sleeping On The Job’, but the picture and sound quality on these is notably poorer. There’s also ‘Cannonball’, a recent heavy rock song in the Gillan tradition, perfomed by G.M.T., featuring John McCoy and Bernie Tormé, plus drummer Robin Guy.
Although it is only listed as a bonus, the interviews section of this release is definitely a main feature here. In over an hour, the history of Gillan is reconstructed through interviews with all members of this classic line-up, except for –unfortunately- Ian Gillan himself. Not too complimentary on the singer – all members still seem to be pretty bitter about how the finances of the band were handled. A pity that Gillan’s side of the story isn’t represented here.
A DVD that Ian Gillan himself wouldn’t be too happy with, I’m sure. But for fans it’s a rare insight into what was going on with the band and the -albeit short- concert performance is really nice to have. Fans will be pleased with this.”
A bit of a superfluous release.

Alweer een nieuw deel in de “Sound and Vision”-reeks. De cd bevat een uitstekende show van een fanatstische band – jammer genoeg in een niet-zo-fantastische geluidskwaliteit. Waarschijnlijk enkel iets voor de die-hard fans. Maar goed, daar lopen er nog wel wat van rond, nietwaar? De show stamt uit 1980 en werd opgenomen in de Hammersmith. Geen idee waar de bonustracks vandaan komen, maar die zijn toch nauwelijks beluisterbaar, aangezien het zeer minderwaardige publieksopnamen zijn.
De dvd werd 2 jaar geleden al eens uitgebracht. Hieronder mijn oorspronkelijke review:
“Nadat Ian Gillan Deep Purple verlaten had in 1973, richtte hij een eigen groep op: The Ian Gillan Band. De jazz/rock-richting waarvoor de band koos was echter niet echt succesvol, dus besloot de zanger om onder de naam Gillan verder te gaan, met een nieuwe groep muzikanten en een echt hardrockgeluid. Deze band kende wel een massaal succes, en deze dvd laat zien hoe goed ze waren.
Het hoofdprogramma is een live tv-optreden opgenomen in 1980 in Edinburgh. De line-up bestond toen uit Ian Gillan, de larger-than-life bassist John McCoy, punky gitarist Bernie Tormé, Colin Towns (toetsen) en Mick Underwood (drums). Er is ook nog het nummer ‘Cannonball’, een heavy rocknummer in de Gillan-traditie, gebracht door G.M.T., een nieuwe groep bestaande uit Bernie Tormé, John McCoy en drummer Robin Guy.
Hoewel ze slechts als een bonus wordt aangekondigd, is de interview-sectie zeker een hoofdonderdeel van deze dvd. Gedurende meer dan een uur wordt de geschiedenis van de band gereconstrueerd via interviews met alle bandleden van de klassieke line-up, behalve –jammer genoeg- Ian Gillan zelf. Het is allemaal niet echt vleiend voor de zanger – zelfs na al die jaren lijken de groepsleden nog steeds verbitterd over hoe de financiële zaken destijds werden geregeld. Spijtig dat we Gillans kant van het verhaal niet te horen krijgen.
Dit is een dvd waar Ian Gillan zelf niet al te gelukkig mee zal zijn, dat is duidelijk. Maar voor fans is het een zeldzaam document waarin ze te weten komen wat er in de achtergrond gebeurde bij de groep, én het –hoewel zeer korte- concert is heel leuk om te hebben. Fans zullen er blij mee zijn.”
Een wat overbodige release.
