In the last decade, Michael Schenker has made the headlines more because of his personal and financial problems, his many concert and tour cancellations and his erratic behaviour than because of his music (which has been quite poor lately) and his guitar playing. He decided to get cleaned up and the first sign of his re-emergence was a well-received tour billed as “Michael Schenker and Friends” (with a.o. ex-MSG vocalist Leif Sundin) last. For his new album, Schenker decided to go back to the roots of his solo career: “In the Midst Of Beauty” features no less than 4/5 of the musicians that recorded the first MSG album: Schenker, drummer Simon Phillips, keyboard wizard Don Airey and last but not least singer Gary Barden. Only bassist Mo Foster was replaced by Neil Murray.
I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed when I listened to this album for the first time. There are no grand epics like ‘Lost Horizons’, ‘But I Want More’ or ‘Let Sleeping Dogs Lie’, no fantastic instrumentals like ‘Into The Arena’ or ‘Captain Nemo’... In fact, the music is more in line with the melodic hard rock produced by Gary Barden’s SILVER than with the old MSG.
But then I do like the SILVER albums, and after a few listens I can’t get this “beauty” out of my cd player anymore. ‘City Lights’, ‘Competition’, ‘I Want You’ and ‘A Night To Remember’ are extremely catchy tunes, which stick to the mind. Proof that Barden’s sense of melody is exactly what Schenker has been missing all these years. ‘Wings Of Emotion’, ‘Nana’ en ‘End Of The Line’ are excellent riff-based tracks. Personal favourites are ‘The Cross Of Crosses’ (which does sound like the old MSG) and the stunning ballad ‘Summerdays’.
Gary Barden’s voice isn’t what it used to be, but he sings in a lower register now, which he does quite effectively. Schenker’s riffs and solos are maybe not quite as spectacular and inventive as in the old days, but he’s still a joy to listen to when he is in form – and he certainly is here.
‘In The Midst of Beauty’ still can’t hold a candle to the early MSG albums, but it is still miles ahead of what Schenker has done in the last fifteen years or so. Let’s hope he’s back for good now.

Michael Schenker is de laatste tijd meer in het nieuws geweest voor zijn persoonlijke en financiële problemen, de vele afgelaste tours en optredens en zijn onvoorspelbare gedrag dan voor zijn muziek (die de laatste tijd behoorlijk zwak was) en zijn gitaarspel. Hij besliste om zichzelf te herpakken en de eerste tekenen van zijn comeback toonde hij in een zeer goed ontvangen tour als “Michael Schenker and Friends” (met o.a. ex-MSG vocalist Leif Sundin). Voor zijn nieuwste album keert Schenker terug naar de roots van zijn solocarrière: op “In The Midst Of Beauty” kreeg hij niet minder dan 4/5 van de muzikanten samen die het eerste MSG-album opnamen: Schenker, drummer Simon Phillips, toetsentovenaar Don Airey en last but not least zanger Gary Barden. Enkel bassist Mo Foster werd vervangen door Neil Murray.
Ik moet toegeven dat ik een beetje teleurgesteld was toen ik de cd voor de eerste keer opzette. Er zijn geen grootse epics als ‘Lost Horizons’, ‘But I Want More’ of ‘Let Sleeping Dogs Lie’, geen fantastische instrumentals als ‘Into The Arena’ of ‘Captain Nemo’... De plaat doet me eigenlijk meer denken aan de melodieuze hardrock van Bardens SILVER dan aan de oude MSG.
Maar ik vind SILVER best wel sterk en na een paar luisterbeurten is ook deze “beauty” niet meer uit mijn cd-speler te krijgen. ‘City Lights’, ‘Competition’, ‘I Want You’ en ‘A Night To Remember’ zijn extreem catchy nummers, die in je hoofd blijven rondspoken. een bewijs dat Bardens gevoel voor melodie precies is wat Schenker al die jaren gemist heeft. ‘Wings Of Emotion’, ‘Nana’ en ‘End Of The Line’ zijn knappe, op riffs gebaseerde tracks. Persoonlijke favorieten zijn ‘The Cross Of Crosses’ (dat wel klinkt als de oude MSG) en de prachtige ballad ‘Summerdays’.
Gary Bardens stem is niet meer wat ze was, maar hij zingt nu in een lager register en doet dat meer dan verdienstelijk. Schenkers riffs en solo’s zijn misschien niet meer zo spectaculair en inventief als vroeger, maar het blijft een waar genot om hem bezig te horen al hij in vorm is - en dat is hier zeker het geval.
‘In The Midst Of Beauty’ haalt het niet bij de vroegste MSG-albums, maar is nog steeds oneindig veel beter dan wat Schenker de laatste 15 jaar of zo gepresteerd heeft. Hopelijk is hij nu voorgoed terug!
