If you go by the expression that it’s better to steal something good than to make a bad imitation of it then this live album by Soul Doctor will deserve a place in your record collection. There’s nothing wrong with giving a classic song a make-over into a new song, just as long as it’s compositionally strong with structure and melody. You will recognize the Soul Doctor songs by the recognizable melodies and song structures from Foreigner, Aerosmith, Thunder, Styx etc…
This makes it all familiar and pleasant. “Laugh in the Face of Danger” reminds you of “Love in the Elevator” and “See You in Heaven”. It also sounds like “Waiting for a Girl Like You”. You can go on and on because we’ve heard all of this before in the 70s and 80s. But this is still a fantastic album. The enthusiasm of this German band won’t disappoint anyone. If you like this kind of music, then I can recommend this album for you. You need professional musicians and an excellent singer to make such a solid album. Soul Doctor definitely has this. The singer, Tommy Heart, and the guitarist, Chris Lynn, make a powerful team.
It was certainly time to release a live studio album after having made four excellent studio albums. All the songs on this ‘That’s Live!’ album are also a combination of the best songs from their four studio albums. This album is also available in a limited double version containing archive material (acoustic and other versions).

Onder het motto: ‘beter goed gepikt dan slecht zelfgemaakt’ kan dit live album van Soul Doctor zeker zijn plaats krijgen in je platenkast. Er is op zich niets mis met je klassiekers te kennen en ze dan te herbewerken in een andere song zodat je een compositorisch sterke song krijgt met opbouw en melodie. In de songs van Soul Doctor herken je melodieën en songstructuren van Foreigner, Aerosmith, Thunder, Styx enz…
Dat maakt het allemaal herkenbaar en aangenaam. “Laugh In The Face Of Danger” heeft bijvoorbeeld iets van “Love In The Elevator” en “See You In Heaven”; verder iets van “Waiting For A Girl Like You”. Zo kan je nog even doorgaan want alles hebben we in de loop van de jaren zeventig en tachtig al eens gehoord. Toch is dit een schitterend album. Het enthousiasme waarmee deze Duitsers te werk gaan kan niemand onberoerd laten. Als je dit soort muziek een warm hart toedraagt dan is dit album echt een aanrader.
Om zo een sterk album te maken heb je dan ook vakmuzikanten nodig en een uitmuntende zanger. Iets waar Soul Doctor zeker over beschikt. Zanger Tommy Heart komt samen met gitarist Chris Lynn enorm sterk over.
Na vier uitstekende studio albums werd het stilaan tijd om een live album uit te brengen. Alle songs op deze ‘That’s Live!’ zijn dan ook een bloemlezing uit deze vier studioalbums. Het album zal ook in een gelimiteerde dubbelversie met archiefmateriaal (akoestisch en andere versies) te verkrijgen zijn.
