I still can’t get over the fact that JOURNEY fired Jeff Scott Soto. One of the finest singers in rock and a magnetic personality on top. In his place comes Arnel Pineda, whom the band picked up after watching him perform with his JOURNEY tribute band on some Youtube clips.
Well, they wanted to get back to the traditional JOURNEY sound, and they have obviously succeeded. Arnel Pineda sounds even more like original vocalist Steve Perry than Steve Augeri did. In fact, most casual listeners would swear this was Perry singing. Is this a good thing? Well, I don’t know... I prefer my singers to have a bit more of a distinctive sound, but I’m sure others will disagree.
Anyway, this two-track promo shows JOURNEY in fine fashion, with two songs from their upcoming album ‘Revelation’, which have the classic JOURNEY sound all over: a lively rocker ‘Never Walk Away’, and a piano driven ballad ‘After All These Years’. Two predictable, but fine songs, which show what JOURNEY stands for, and I can’t fault the songs or the band.
I still wish they had kept Soto, though...

Ik kan er nog steeds niet overheen dat JOURNEY Jeff Scott Soto aan de deur zette. Een van de allerbeste rockzangers, met daarenboven nog een magnetische persoonlijkheid ook. In zijn plaats komt nu Arnel Pineda, die de band ontdekte na enkele clips van zijn JOURNEY coverband te hebben gezien op Youtube.
Wel, als ze terug naar die traditionele JOURNEY sound wilden, hebben ze hun zin gekregen. Arnel Pineda klinkt zelfs nog meer als Perry dan Steve Augeri. Niet-ingewijden zouden dan ook zweren dat dit Perry zelf is. Een goeie zaak? Ik weet het niet; wat mij betreft moet een zanger toch een wat meer eigen persoonlijkheid tonen, meer herkenbaar zichzelf zijn. Maar anderen zullen het allicht oneens zijn met mij.
In ieder geval tonen de twee nummers op deze promo een JOURNEY in uitstekende vorm. Twee nummers uit hun binnenkort te verschijnen album “Revelation”, die het toonbeeld zijn van de klassieke JOURNEY sound: de levendige rocker ‘Never Walk Away’, en de door piano gedreven ballad ‘After All These Years’. Twee erg voorspelbare, maar toch knappe nummers, die laten zien waar JOURNEY voor staat. Ik heb dan ook niets op te merken over deze nummers of over de uitvoering van de band.
En toch wou ik dat ze met Soto waren verdergegaan…
