It is amazing how this group is listed in media as Goth, glam and industrial rock at the same time, even in the promotion material. Well, I was doing my best, trying to find some of these influences in their sound. It wasn’t easy, but I found some… Nevertheless, I would not advice Uninvited Guest to people, looking for something gothic, like Evanescence or Epica. On the other hand, if you are looking for some dramatic or theatrical experience and are (still) fond of David Bowie or Queen, and, well, Muse, you may quite enjoy this record. Uninvited Guest sounds and looks very theatrical indeed. Well, everything needs a label, so “glam” it could be, if you like.
The vocal of the front man Dean Hathaway is quite good. I would even dare to compare it with David Bowie’s. The lyrics are central, but the music is nicely composed as well. Once in a while it sounds quite hard, but mostly it’s something else: soft, a little “proggie” rock, ballads and even waltz and Dixieland. Both music and lyric don’t get to some really higher grounds as those of the named predecessors and enlightening examples. And technically, they are not highfliers as well. The lyrics sound actually too pedantic and social here and there. I would not be surprised if the band will ever - perfectly invited - appear on the pre-election party of the Greens. But on the whole, the record is quite solid, modestly arranged and produced.
It would be 7 out of 10, if not for those righteous lyrics…

Verrassend, hoe deze groep wordt genoemd als Goth, glam en industrial rock in één adem, zelfs in het promotiemateriaal. Ik was mijn best aan het doen en probeerde sommige van deze invloeden in hun muziek te ontdekken. Het was niet makkelijk, maar ik heb wel wat gevonden… Maar toch, ik zou Uninvited Guest niet aan diegenen adviseren, die iets echt gothics zoeken, zoals Evanescence of Epica. Aan de andere hand, als je iets dramatisch of theatraal zoekt, en (nog steeds) van David Bowie of Queen houdt, of, vooruit - Muse, kun je dit album heel aardig gaan vinden. Uninvited Guest klinkt vrij theatraal en ziet er ook zo uit. En ja, alles heeft een stempeltje nodig, laat het dan in dit geval “glam” zijn.

Beide muziek en lyriek komen niet echt naar de hogere sferen, zoals die van de genoemde voorgangers en lichtende voorbeelden. Technisch gezien zijn ze ook geen hoogvliegers. De teksten klinken soms te belerend en sociaal. Het zal me niet verbazen, als zij ooit – uitgenodigd – op een verkiezingscampagnefeestje van de Greens zouden verschijnen. Maar al met al, het is een solide en redelijk gearrangeerd en geproduceerd plaat.
Het zou ook 7 van 10 krijgen, waren het niet die rechtvaardige teksten.
