Take the first letters of the oddly titled new Glenn Hughes album “First Underground Nuclear Kitchen” and you’ll understand what this is all about: F.U.N.K! Sure, Hughes was always heavily influenced by funk and soul, and in most of his previous work this can be heard, but never as pronounced as here.
For this record, Glenn Hughes has chosen not to compromise and play exactly the music that he likes best. Songs like the title track, ‘Love Communion’ and ‘We Go To War’ are extremely groovy, brass-laden funk tracks. This groove is omnipresent – ‘Crave’ and ‘Oil And Water’ are more rocky, but these are still basically funk tracks. ‘Satellite’, ‘Where There’s A Will’ and ‘Imperfection’ are very soulful songs, which sound quite like Hughes’ very first solo album “Play Me Out” – I for one am very happy to hear this side of the artist again. ‘Too Late To Save The World’ is most reminiscent of his brilliant previous album “Music For The Divine” and is, probably not coincidentally, my personal favourite.
As always, Hughes has surrounded himself with some very competent musicians. JJ March only plays on 2 songs, but he is back in the Glenn Hughes Band. George Nastos (another guitar player who worked with Hughes before) also plays on two tracks. Most of the guitars, though, are handled by newcomer Luis Maldonado, and he’s perfect for the job. RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS’ Chad Smith returns on drums and the keyboards are played by Anders Olinder and Ed Roth.
Those who only like Hughes as a rock singer might feel the urge to skip this one. I’d advise them to still check it out, though, as Hughes always brings top quality. Maybe this album will be able to bring Glenn Hughes’ music to a whole new audience.

Neem de eerste letters van het vreemd getitelde nieuwe Glenn Hughes album “First Underground Nuclear Kitchen” en je hebt meteen door waar het hier allemaal om draait: F.U.N.K.! Natuurlijk is Hughes altijd sterk beïnvloed geweest door funk en soul, en dit is in het meeste van zijn voorgaande werk te horen, maar nooit zo overduidelijk als hier.
Voor dit album heeft Hughes ervoor gekozen om geen toegevingen te doen en exact die muziek te spelen waar hij zelf het meest van houdt. Tracks als het titelnummer, ‘Love Communion’ en ‘We Go To War’ zijn extreem groovy, met blazers opgesmukte funksongs. Deze groove is alomtegenwoordig - ‘Crave’ en ‘Oil And Water’ rocken meer, maar zijn in essentie nog steeds funknummers. ‘Satellite’, ‘Where There’s A Will’ en ‘Imperfection’ zijn zeer soulvolle songs, die nog het meest klinken als Hughes’ allereerste soloalbum ‘Play Me Out’ – ik ben alvast zeer gelukkig dat we die zijde van de artiest nog eens te horen krijgen. ‘Too Late To Save The World’ zou perfect gepast hebben op zijn schitterende voorgaande album “Music For The Divine” en is, waarschijnlijk niet toevallig, mijn persoonlijke favoriet.
Net als altijd heeft Hughes zich weer omringd met zeer competente muzikanten. JJ Marsh speelt op slechts 2 nummers mee, maar hij heeft wel degelijk opnieuw de Glenn Hughes band vervoegd. George Nastos (een andere gitarist met wie Hughes in het verleden al gespeeld heeft) neemt ook twee songs voor zijn rekening. De meeste gitaarpartijen worden echter ingespeeld door nieuwkomer Luis Maldonado, en hij klinkt perfect voor dit soort plaat. Chad Smith van de RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS is weer te horen op de drums en de toetsenpartijen zijn van de hand van Anders Olinder en van Ed Roth.
Wie enkel kickt op Glenn Hughes de rockzanger zal wellicht geneigd zijn om deze nieuwe plaat links te laten liggen. Maar ook hen zou ik aanraden om ze toch eens uit te proberen – Hughes brengt nu eenmaal altijd kwaliteit. En misschien kan Hughes met dit album zijn muziek ook aan een heel nieuw publiek voorstellen.
