Yet another new project put together by Frontiers records? Well, yes and no. It does seem to be a project rather than a proper band, but it certainly isn’t new. Keyboard player Eric Ragno put CHINA BLUE together in the late 80’s, along with Tom Gasbarro. Some demos were recorded but nothing really happened, and when Gasbarro decided to move on, CHINA BLUE was put on ice. Later, Ragno co-founded VOX TEMPUS and worked together with TAKARA, Ted Poley, Steve Grimmett, Danny Vaughn, Hugo/Ramos and countless others, but CHINA BLUE never left his mind.
After a meeting with Michael Riesenbeck, he decided to dust off the old demos and start working on a proper CHINA BLUE album. He got together some great musicians, most notably guitarist Josh Ramos (THE STORM, TWO FIRES) and singer Tony Mills (TNT, ex-SWEET, SHY) and recorded “Twilight Of Destiny”.
Melodic rock and AOR fans will be delighted with the result: this is an excellent album in the best JOURNEY / THE STORM tradition and those who like Mills best for his work with SHY, will be happy to know he delivers a lot better than on the last two TNT albums. Among the many similar sounding albums that have been released lately (many of them also by Frontiers), this one risks being looked over. As far as I’m concerned, though, it does stand out, especially because the songwriting is really good. Excellent effort.

Alweer een nieuw project dat door Frontiers Records in mekaar is gestoken? Wel, ja en neen. Het lijkt inderdaad meer een project te zijn dan een echte groep, maar nieuw is het zeker niet. Toetsenman Eric Ragno stond mee aan de wieg van CHINA BLUE in de late jaren ’80, samen met Tom Gasbarro. Er werden enkele demo’s opgenomen, maar het liep niet echt los, en toen Gasbarro besloot om de groep achter zich te laten, werd CHINA BLUE in de koelkast gezet. Later werkte Ragno - die mede-oprichter was van VOX TEMPUS - samen met TAKARA, Ted Poley, Steve Grimmett, Danny Vaughn, Hugo/Ramos en talloze anderen, maar CHINA BLUE bleef altijd ergens in zijn hoofd rondspoken.
Na een ontmoeting met Michael Riesenbeck, besloot hij om de oude demo’s van onder het stof te halen en te beginnen werken aan een echt CHINA BLUE album. Hij bracht enkele uitstekende muzikanten samen - de meest tot de verbeelding sprekende namen zijn gitarist Josh Ramos (THE STORM, TWO FIRES) en zanger Tony Mills (TNT, ex-SWEET, SHY) - en samen namen ze “Twilight Of Destiny” op.
Fans van melodieuze rock en aor zullen opgetogen zijn met het resultaat: dit is een uitstekende plaat in de beste traditie van JOURNEY/THE STORM, en wie Mills vooral waardeerde voor zijn werk met SHY, zal blij zijn te vernemen dat dit een heel stuk beter klinkt dan de laatste twee TNT-albums. Er bestaat altijd het gevaar dat deze cd verloren raakt tussen de vele gelijkaardig klinkende platen die er de laatste tijd zijn uitgebracht (waaronder verschillende ook bij Frontiers). Wat mij betreft steekt deze er echter wel bovenuit, vooral dan omdat de composities bijzonder knap zijn. Uitstekend plaatje.
